The Icedistro Jewelry Care & Longevity Guide
Whether it’s VVS Moissanite or 5A Cubic Zirconia, jewelry is an investment. Proper maintenance prevents oxidation, protects the “fire” of the stones, and keeps the plating looking thick and vibrant.
To maintain the “Day One” shine of high-end hip-hop jewelry, you need to understand that different materials require different levels of care. Because icedistro.com offers everything from 925 Sterling Silver to Stainless Steel and Brass, this guide is categorized by material to ensure you get the longest life out of their “ice.”
1. General Rules for All “Iced Out” Pieces
No matter the material, these three rules apply to all jewelry with handset stones:
- The “Last On, First Off” Rule: Put your jewelry on after applying colognes, lotions, or hairsprays. These chemicals can create a film on stones, dulling their brilliance.
- Avoid Submersion: While Stainless Steel won’t rust, chlorine (pools) and salt water (ocean) can weaken the setting of the stones over time.
- Storage is Key: Store pieces individually in a soft pouch or a lined jewelry box. This prevents the “ice” on one piece from scratching the metal of another.
2. Caring for Your Stones (Moissanite & CZ)
The “fire” of a stone comes from light passing through it. If the back of the stone is dirty, the shine disappears.
- The Cleaning Solution: Use warm water mixed with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- The Technique: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub the front and especially the back of the stones. Dirt and skin oils usually build up in the “breathing holes” behind the stones.
- The Finish: Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners for brass-based jewelry, as the vibrations can loosen the stones.
3. Material-Specific Maintenance
3.1. 925 Sterling Silver (Elite Grade)
Silver naturally oxidizes when exposed to sulfur in the air.
- Care: Wear it often! The natural oils in your skin actually help prevent tarnish.
- Cleaning: Use a specialized silver polishing cloth to remove dark spots. Do not use paper towels, as they can scratch the soft silver.
3.2. Stainless Steel (Pro-Performance Grade)
The most durable and “worry-free” material we offer.
- Care: Stainless steel is resistant to tarnish and scratches. It is the best choice for daily-wear “bust down” pieces.
- Cleaning: A simple wipe with a damp cloth is usually enough.
3.3. Brass & Copper (Essential Grade)
These materials are more sensitive to moisture and pH levels.
- Care: Keep these pieces as dry as possible. If the piece gets wet, dry it immediately.
- Protection: Avoid wearing brass jewelry during heavy workouts, as sweat can accelerate the wear of the gold plating.
4. Plating Preservation (PVD & Gold Vermeil)
We use a high-tech PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating, which is much thicker than standard plating. However, it still requires care:
- No Polishing Compounds: Never use jewelry cleaners that contain abrasive chemicals or acids. They will strip the gold layer off.
- Sweat Barrier: If you wear your jewelry while sweating, wipe it down with a dry cloth afterward to remove salts that can eat away at the plating.
